Mormon wells trail 2

Mormon Well Road

I've heard a lot of good comments from many local off-road enthusiasts about a popular off-road trail named "Mormon Well Road". It begins a little north of Las Vegas. I've wanted to drive it for a while but wanted to do it with a group. So, I waited until the time was right. The opportunity finally presented itself and I joined a group ride sponsored by SNOT (Southern Nevada Off-road Trailers).

I met members of the SNOT group at the Smiths Marketplace near Skye Canyon Park Drive and North Grand Canyon at 10am for a driver meeting. This put me about 14 miles from my home near West Sahara and Buffalo. There we had the opportunity to gas up and purchase other supplies if needed. One of the items mentioned at the meeting was that we would be able to communicate with each other using GRMS channel 15. I found it helpful to comment or ask questions while traveling on the trail.

We rolled out at 10:30pm, drove about 13 miles on highway 95 heading north. After passing route 157 "Kyle Canyon Road" we turned right onto Corn Creek Road heading east. We took a right just past the Corn Creek Visitors Center and stopped to air down our tires. It is not necessary to air down but recommended and makes the ride much more comfortable.

I counted 26 vehicles, mostly jeeps but included a Suburban, Power Ram truck, Tacoma, Bronco, and my Silverado 2500. We then took a quick left and headed east into the mountains.

We continued on at a leisurely pace for about 13 miles, to an area of the trail known as "Pick-A-Boo Canyon", because of it narrow winding road and close in mountains of each side. And from there we traveled around another 10 miles to the near half-way point of the trail where we came to the Desert Pass Camping / Day Use Area.

We stopped here for close to an hour and enjoyed a picnic lunch.  Some people ate sandwiches they had made or bought. Others grilled burgers and hotdogs.
Children and dogs had a good time playing while the adults enjoyed the views and talked about all things off-roading.

It was soon decided it was time to get back on the trail. A few drivers chose to go back the way we came, while most of us continued on another 14 miles to route 93 where we aired up our tires. From there we left on our own and headed south to where highway 93 intersects I-15. Continuing south I made my way back to Las Vegas and across the valley to my home on the west side.

The entire trip, for me, was approximately 117 miles round trip and somewhere around seven hours.

If you've never experienced the Mormon Wells Road, grab a friend and at least two vehicles and experience it for yourself. Or better yet join one of the many local off-road groups who have pages on Facebook and enjoy an organized and managed trail ride.
