Garmin Mini 2 Dash Cam

For years I have thought about how valuable it would be to have a dash cam in my automobile. I've heard the stories; I've seen the YouTube videos showing the evidence when a traffic incident was not the drivers fault. I've seen how it can turn the officer's attention to the real cause of the mishap, and possibly preventing you from receiving a ticket. And, how it can direct the insurance company to put blame for the claim where it truly lies, saving you a raise in rates.

I've been very fortunate for the last 20 plus years of driving my 1999 Ford explorer to not have been involved in a single automobile incident of any kind. I am a very safe and cautious driver and have no reason the think that my driving record will change now that I am driving and newer vehicle. But this new truck is more than merely transportation, it is my project for adventure. My plan is to modify this truck considerably. In all of this modification it just seemed appropriate to include measures to help protect my investment.

While doing my research I fell upon the Garmin Mini 2. Why the Garmin Mini 2? As is common, it became overwhelming. There are so many offers out there for dash cams, all claiming to be the best. How do you know? Who do you trust? I decided to just go with a name I knew with a price within my budget. And so far, I am pleased with my decision.

Here are the features of the Garmin Mini 2:

Incident detection.
1080p camera resolution.
140-degree field of view.
Voice control.
30 FPS frame rate.
Connects to the Garmin Drive app to view videos.
Able to store videos with online video storge.
Parking guard
Live view if connected to wi-fi using the Garmin Drive app.

Not too bad for a little more than $100 and a recognizable name. What I don't care about this camera is that it has no built-in video screen. Videos must be viewed on a mobile device with the free Garmin Drive app. I'll give it some time and work with it and decide if I like it or may want to try other options.

I'm considering, in the near future, upgrading to a more feature rich device from Garmin named the "Garmin nuviCam LMTHD." No, I don't know how to pronounce it. But it includes GPS navigation, built-in dash cam, a long list of advanced features, and the ability to attach a rear-view camera (cold separately).
